For a commercial nursery operation, weed control is vital. Weeds compete with desirable nursery stock for water, nutrients and space. In addition, weeds host and attract pests and diseases. Not only does the nursery and greenhouse stock need to be weed-free, but the grounds need to be clean as well to avoid contamination. Maintaining a comprehensive weed control program must be a top priority for nursery operators.
Container nurseries spend nearly twice as much on hand weeding than on herbicides, according to a study by Jefferson Davis Associates, Inc., a leading market research group. Because of the high-value stock and plant sensitivity, there is often a reluctance to use herbicides to control weeds.
When hand weeding, nursery operators should always pull weeds when they are young, prior to flowering. It also is important to remove the entire weed, including the root, rhizome and other underground plant parts. However, there is still no guarantee the weed will be gone for good, or won’t multiply as a result of hand weeding.
The fact is, hand weeding can strangle profits in no time. Say an approximate wage for an employee pulling weeds is $9.50 per hour, and it takes roughly one hour to hand-weed 1,000 square feet. It would cost more than $400 to hand weed one acre, and if hand-weeding took place four times per year, it could cost a company an additional $1,600 to hand-weed one acre per year.
